Ocean Grove takes out Champion of State Pennant

Congratulations to GBR Weekend Pennant winners, Premier Division, Ocean Grove, who have just won Gold in the 2022-23 BV State Champion of Pennant Championships.

Played at Moama Bowling Club on 6th & 7th May, the twelve Region winners, split into two sections, played each other over 5 games of 15 ends.  The Ocean Grove side started strong winning well in the first two rounds.  In the final game for the first day they played the other two game winner – Bendigo Bowls Club, and were leading in the final stages but dropped a few shots in the closing ends to end up 3 shots down overall.  They then went on to have two convincing wins in both games on Sunday.  In another nailbiter game, the undefeated side of Bendigo BC played Frankston in their last and in the reverse of their game against Ocean Grove, it was Frankston who secured vital shots in the closing stages to win by 1 shot which put Ocean Grove in the final with 4 wins and most shots up.

Ocean Grove played the other section winner, Deer Park BC in a thrilling final with both sides bowling well.  It was the Brad Pavey led rink who earned themselves a convincing lead, contributing to the overall win of 43 – 39.  The Peter Loe rink was even throughout the game and held on to post a win by 2 shots.  Matt Flapper’s rink playing the Mark Casey rink were bettered on the day but it was a conversion draw bowl by Matt on the last end which earned them the extra points needed.
