GBR Pennant

State Pennant Championships

Winners of Victorian Region’s top side Pennants have played in the BV Champion of State Pennant at Moama Bowls Club.

The Weekend Pennant winners played Saturday & Sunday 21st & 22nd May.  Playing 5 matches round robin in two sections, the winner of each section playing in the Final.

Geelong Bowls Region’s Premier division winner, Ocean Grove accounted themselves well, winning all 5 rounds.  Playing in the final against Section 2’s winner, also with 5 wins was South Bendigo from Bendigo Campaspe Goldfields.  This was a true battle, with South Bendigo in the lead over the 3 rinks all game however Ocean Grove gave themselves every chance and fought to be within 3 shots with Matt Flapper’s last bowl searching for a trail to give them the shots required.  Despite managing a similar turnover in the previous end, Matt’s bowl drew shot, leaving the side a Silver Medal 42-43.  Congratulations for a great effort and well done to South Bendigo for the win (last year’s runners up).

The Midweek Pennant sides competed over Monday & Tuesday 23rd & 24th May, in the same format.  Geelong Bowls Region’s Division 1 winner City of Geelong also gave themselves every chance.  The “Myers” rink of Shaun, Jenny McLean, Lance Kelly and skip Lorraine posted some huge wins over the course of the 5 games, helping to secure four wins out of five.  After the first day they were holding 2 wins out of 3 after Portland prevailed in game 2.  They then had to play best-placed Bundoora first up on the second day in a do or die run to win the section.  With a well fought win over Bundoora, Geelong were placed third with equal wins going into the last.  It was Portland with only their one win against City on the board who, in beating best placed Bundoora, gave City the boost to the top of the ladder.  The final against Section A winner Gisborne & District BC was a nailbiter which saw City hold an early lead overall until the closing ends, where a massive 6 held by Gisborne in the second last end got them into the lead and closed out the match.  Congratulations on the Silver Medal and well done to Gisborne & District BC from Ballarat Highlands for the win.
